Wassup 24?! That's nearly two and a half decades old. Bizarre, weird, ew. Yep, last week was my birthday - and it was just bliss. Sort of. I was sick for seven days with the stomach flu but that didn't even really matter with how incredible B, my friends and fam made me feel. I am very lucky! Side note, this is my THIRD TIME writing this post - it deleted three times in a row.....and I had saved it too. W T F . This called for an old fashioned Word document to write a rough draft....so much work - clicking between windows like this. It’s poppycock. Anyway, yeah! Last week was pretty amazing outside of constant upchucking, cold sweats, high fevers, wheezing, sneezing, and feeling like a true zombie. For the past few months I have had an appointment to get tattooed by a little lady by the name of Melvin Arizmendi. She is just impeccable and filled with marshmallows, fairy sparkles, and happiness. I’d have to say she is a lovely blend of The Powerpuff Girls - that's pretty hard to pull off. She takes such pride in her work and everything she emits is just…..what I dream of in my own imaginary world. (Seriously, can we be 5ever best friends?) I was swept away when she replied to my email to schedule me to get a birthday tattoo - I wasn’t going to let anything stop me. I got hopped up on DayQuil and made my way to her private studio. She designed a custom birthstone piece that I just can’t stop gushing over. It wasn’t even too painful which was shocking based on the faces I received from people when I mentioned getting a rib tattoo. The only pretty shitty part was the last thirty minutes or so when she really was grinding in the saturation. Well, what are you waiting for - look at this beautiful gem embedded on me forever! I am already thinking up all of the other tattoos I want from her in the future.
Melvin's IG: @melvin_arizmendi; go check out all her work! It's fantastic and will slap a smile on your face.
Leaving my birthday with solely gifting myself a nifty new piece of skin art was all I could imagine for my day - but having the amazing folks in my life that I do, it didn’t end there! (*tears*) B’s mom generously gave me a PS4!!!!! With Battlefront! A while ago I had to sell my beloved console so I have been game-less for quite some time. I shrieked! I still have yet to try out Battlefront but am so excited to begin. I’ve heard rave shizzle about it so a review may be coming at ya’ll from yours truly even though it’s been out for a little bit. We shall see. My gamertag is _kenNERDdy so tell me what to play and let’s bond over geekdom.
You’d think that’s the end of an awesome birthday, huh? I did too! But B told me he had a huge surprise for me so he was going to give me hints until the “big reveal” on December 20th. I was enthralled and perplexed. The hints were a series of puzzles I had to solve to reach a one word answer at the end of every one. To me, that was a gift in itself because you know how I deeply love a good mystery to solve. After two weeks, I discovered the clues were: German, Sand, Sponge, Fire, Last Name, and Desk….not too exciting, huh? I felt so pumped solving those seven hints only to be even more confused.
This is what I put together: We are going to a German sand beach where a sponge will be set on fire and from a distance, in a beach house, some psychopath will watch while carving my last name into a desk. How thrilling, romantic, and completely ....incorrect, right? Yup! I just couldn’t piece it together. I was getting awfully frustrated and began pestering B beyond all means until he caved. (My Irish stubbornness prevails!) He pointed to my Nancy Drew tattoo and it all clicked! ESCAPE ROOM! YES! SCORE! All of the clues I figured out revolved around various ND mysteries from the past. For some reason, I didn’t even think of that originally and my mind was being way too literal.
House of Hints is where we went - and it was a vivid, real life Nancy Drew scenario! It was a real dream come true for me. For those who are unaware, Escape Rooms are popping up all over recently thanks to the trend in Europe. You’re basically placed in a room and need to solve puzzles to escape said room in a set amount of time. House of Hints has a few different tiers you can choose from: “The P.I.’s Office”, “Black Ops Safe House”, and “The CSI Lab”. They all incorporate puzzles, clues, a time limit and a need to communicate in order to escape on time. A lot of businesses go here as a training tactic for new hires to teach their noobies how to work as a team. It’s really neat. Our room was “The P.I.’s Office” so it was pretty 1930’s-esque. We were even going to get super into it by dressing up in time period appropriate attire….but since we went straight after my shift, ( I work about an hour away from home) I didn’t want to bring a change of clothes. Not being able to get ready at home gives me horrible anxiety - I normally forget something important like pants so to avoid that catastrophe I stayed in my 2015 clothes (More like 2006…I need to go shopping **burn**) and enjoyed the scenario while being in character with my imagination. The tour guide was phenomenal too! He seemed genuine while possessing a very dry sense of humor - I’m unsure if that was part of the character of anyone that works there or just him, but I’m sure glad he was our guide. There’s a camera in the room with you as well with a TV monitor that serves as a way of communication between you and your tour guide person. I was cursing a lot, as the polite lady I am, so jokingly our guide would tell us to censor ourselves and flicker the lights on & off but he was dropping F bombs all evening so I think it was supposed to be an ironic type of joke….maybe? Anyway, if you get stuck and are a little too buzzed to figure out kind of obvious hints….the guide will spell it out for you without literally spelling it out via the monitor. It helps you feel like you still are solving things with no help but allows you to stay within the time crunch. We fled the room in 67 minutes with a timer of 60 minutes….which I think isn’t too shabby for not knowing what to expect with this new experience. I’m going to go back for sure to do that CSI themed room - there’s a forensics lab and shit! Stellar.

Right down the street from this House of Hints is a cozy little establishment called Proud Mary’s Southern Bar and Grill. It had neat decor topped with a warm, inviting air. It wasn’t heaven on Earth or anything, but it was nice. Our waitress was probably the only issue I had. We were literally the only customers in there (It was a Sunday night and this place is kind of off the beaten path unless the music is live) and she was not attentive, not engaging and did not know how to make a drink. My martini that I ordered was supposed to be sugar rimmed, but the restaurant must have had some salt dropped in the sugar bin by accident because there was salt AND sugar on my glass - which are two flavors not meant to be mixed together. I did order the same drink three times though, so that’s on me I suppose but the drinks got me buzzed so that’s all that matters. I ordered a scrumptious mac-n-cheese and Caesar salad to go with my alcohol. The mac was so delicious! It was made with so many different cheeses and had a powdered cheese on top - I normally don’t like lots of different textures (I’m 3), but it was perfect. The Caesar was very good too! Many restaurants lack a respect for the perfect mix of fresh lettuce, dressing and parm (I don’t get croutons on it) but Proud Mary’s did it justice. All in all, it was great!
Here are some really lovely gifts a few of my great friends got me: (SUCH THOUGHTFUL….*TEARS* *TEARS* TEARS*)
This birthday was AMAZE BALLS for lack of a better phrase! (I seriously am on the fourth round of writing from scratch now… my head hurts) I felt like Nancy Drew in REAL life, got the most gorgeous tattoo, have a PS4 again and am officially finished hearing that really stupid pun, “SO NOBODY LIKES YOU SINCE YOU’RE 23, RIGHT?!!?” (Nudge, nudge, poke, poke…) Ew - that joke needs to be buried. We get it, you heard that Blink song but….keep it to yourself.
Anyway, thanks for reading and remember to #staynerdy! Have a happy holiday with whatever you are celebrating. What are your plans? I’m going to see Star Wars (finally) tomorrow evening at a “luxurious” theater that allows me to get drunk, recline back with no strangers sitting next to me, and eat a cheese plate. PERFECTO. (My lactose intolerance will thank me for all this damn cheese in my system this week….) Other then that, I plan on enjoying my week off by doing as little as possible by mindlessly playing Battlefront. #YAS
NEWS OF THE WEEK
GUYS GUYS GUYS - the latest trailer for KH3 was released and I almost peed myself all the way instead of just a little bit! I cannot wait for this to FINALLY (it’s been a decade…) be released. I may lose my job when it’s released because I’ll be locked in my little hut for days….WATCH IT.
FILM OF THE WEEK
Ironically and in a cliche manner, it’s obviously Star Wars: The Force Awakens! All of the reviews are golden so my hopes are mountain high for this movie. I cannot wait to be on that hype level everyone else is. Also - SHOCKINGLY - no spoilers have been on my social media besides basic praise for how great the movie was. So, thanks internet.
NOSTALGIA OF THE WEEK
Since I’ve been hibernating all week and have just been watching Hulu 24/7…. I stumbled across Unfabulous being released! My 12 year old self screeched when I saw this and my sadness for the end of Scream Queens ceased with seeing young Emma Roberts on the screen. In the current episode I am watching while writing this, to touch on my fashion sense and how old my clothes are, Addie is seriously wearing a jacket I have in my closet that I wear often in this episode - THIS SHOW IS 10 YEARS OLD. I suck. Anyway, little hints of Chanel are definitely present in Addie’s (Emma Roberts) character so it’s been a good week despite feeling a little bit dead. (FYI Coach Pearson is LIFE)
